LOL, I think I created this website just to tell this story, as I have been wanting to share it for many years now. Since 1985!
Anyway, many of those scenes in ‘Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Beginning‘ was shot in Camarillo, California — ironically, the movie was filmed near a real mental facility — scenes like (from) the exterior and interior shots at the Pinehurst Halfway House. We were VERY near the Camarillo State Mental Hospital.
Camarillo State Mental Hospital, also known as Camarillo State Hospital, was a psychiatric hospital for both developmentally disabled and mentally ill patients in Camarillo, California. The hospital closed in 1997. The site has been redeveloped as the California State University, Channel Islands. The university has retained the distinctive Mission Revival Style architecture, and the bell tower in the South quad has been adopted as the symbol of the university. (Wikipedia)
So let me tell you the crazy thing that happened in my motel room in Camarillo!
Notice I said “motel,” lol. It was a Paramount Pictures production but we weren’t exactly staying in a 5-Star hotel.
I had to be on the set very early the next day. I shared a room with my stand-in, a guy who was like a brother to me and a gentleman that had been living in my real life household for a couple of years. My family and I got him the job to be my stand-in in the movie.
Anyway…I just couldn’t sleep that night in the motel. As I lay asleep, I kept hearing this flickering sound in my ear. At first I thought it was a dream but when I awoke I kept hearing the same fluttering sound in my ear! Flutter Flutter Flutter…in my ear! It didn’t hurt but I thought I was going crazy! I poked my finger in my ear and I felt nothing…just your average ear hole with maybe, slightly a little ear wax, lol.
I tried to go back to sleep but I couldn’t. The fluttering sound continue throughout the whole the night…what the heck was it?!!
Flutter Flutter Flutter.
I spent most of the wee hours of the morning trying to figure out what was going on…was I going crazy??
Finally, my stand-in asked…”What does it feel like?”
I replied, “It’s like flapping, something’s flapping in my ear!!”
And that’s when he rushed me to the bathroom — to a running bathtub.
He placed my ear under the running water. The flapping eventually stopped!!
“There it is,” he replied.
To my astonishment..a pregnant roach with wings lay halfway dead by the drain. Still fluttering its wings. Finally it went down the drain.
Thank God it was finally gone!
Now I could finally get some sleep. Nope! The sun was rising, and the alarm was going off. It was time to get back to work.
